Genius of Emotion

HUNDREDS of facts and thousands details in a book can be understood by any average analytical and reasoning mind.

But intellectual understanding does not usually come with directions for living our life, or correctly understanding the fine print.

Because, “the intellect alone,” as William Q. Judge wrote in the Ocean of Theosophy, “is cold, heartless and selfish.”

Backing this up, Blavatsky says in an article, that “Great intellectual powers are often no proof of, but are impediments to spiritual and right conceptions.”

Altruism, a power that is surely a blend of feelings and mind, exemplifies, Blavatsky wrote,  “real Theosophy.”

The core heart power of Devotion, which underlies the whole universe, according to The Secret Doctrine (1:210), “is innate in us, and which we find alike in human babe and the young of the animal.”

“All of the skills and abilities you need to create a wonderful life and smoothly functioning relationships lie waiting somewhere else inside you,” empath and researcher Karla McLaren claims in her article “Welcoming Your Emotional Genius.”

And in her book, “The Language of Emotions: What Your Feelings Are Trying to Tell You,” explains:

“I share these empathic skills to help you access the gifts your emotions bring you.”

That ‘somewhere else’ is your emotions, she says, and “if you learn their language, you’ll have all the energy, intelligence, intuition, empathy, integrity, and strength of character you need to create a healthy life for yourself, your loved ones, your colleagues, and the world.”

This may seem like a tall claim. Yet our emotional genius benefits our health through altruism, intention and intuition.

Spiritual activity apparently drives a higher aspect of our minds, capable of connecting whatever dots the game of life can throw at us.

Language of Emotions

For both children and adults, as this video report shows, calming the heart rendering its activity more congruent through positive emotions, has a marked difference on attitudes and behaviors.

Altruism Helps the Brain

Unselfish feelings have a protective effect, apparently reducing brain strain. “Even ignorance is better than Head-learning,” counsels The Voice of the Silence, “with no Soul-wisdom to illuminate and guide it.”

“Altruism is an integral part of self-development,” Blavatsky wrote in The Key to Theosophy.

§

Far from being goody-goody emotionality, altruism and unselfish intentions purify our underlying emotions.

Theosophists, Blavatsky says, are in “thorough sympathy and harmony with all true efforts in this direction.” Such training and development “is one of the express objects of Theosophy.”

Altruism, a clear indicator of a selfless motive and intention, purifies our emotions.

When we blend our mind and soul, as noted in a previous post Emotions of Truth, the hidden patterns of life’s puzzles are revealed— by feeling the feeling, and merged with reason, it gives certain knowing.

Altruistic Chimps

Chimps show signs of Altruism

Developmental and Comparative psychologist Felix Warneken says that Chimps and young infants “both show that some level of altruism may be innate and not just a factor of education.” On a study of the surprising phenomenon, Warneken commented:

“This is the first evidence of chimpanzees helping somebody they don’t know. But we also found they helped other chimps.”

Elsewhere in the animal world there are many examples of apparent altruism. Dolphins, for example, will support sick or injured animals, swimming under them for hours at a time and pushing them to the surface so they can breathe.

He further noted that “People say we become altruistic because our parents teach us so, but that young children are originally selfish.

“This suggests,” he remarks, “maybe culture is not the only source of altruism.”

Ö

Emotional Coherence

For centuries, the heart has been considered the source of emotion, courage and wisdom. The Institute of HeartMath (IHM) Research Center, is exploring the physiological mechanisms by which the heart communicates with the brain, thereby influencing information processing, perceptions, emotions and health.

Compassion

By contrast, the desire for suicide, Blavatsky wrote, is due to  “a morbid brain disease, or to most decided and strong materialistic views,” and is exemplified by certain radical fundamentalists today.

Living a pure faith and exemplifying an altruistic life, cannot always protect against outrageous domination by imperialism, as Tibet knows only too well.

“My true religion, my simple faith is in love and compassion,” the Dalai Lama declared.

“There is no need for complicated philosophy, doctrine, or dogma.”

ζ

“Our own heart, our own mind, is the temple,” he says. “The doctrine is compassion. Love for others and respect for their rights and dignity, no matter who or what they are – these are ultimately all we need.”

Intellect Not Enough

“Science is helping us understand (finally) that the so-called rational aspects of our brains aren’t able to hold enough conflicting information in working memory to organize a complex decision,” as quoted previously from Karla McLaren in The Language of Emotions:

“Emotions and sensations,” she says, “are an integral part of our capacity to think and experience the world.”

γ

That energy flow is what Blavatsky often referred to as “Theosophy pure and simple,” and that

“It alone can furnish,” she says, “the beacon-light needed to guide humanity on its true path.”

Ï

It is something one realizes intuitionally, she said, “that the recognition of pure Theosophy” is experiencing it as “the philosophy of the rational explanation of things and not the tenets.”

“What About Really
Bad Decisions?”

“Good question,” McLaren replies, noting: “you may be recalling multiple images of highly emotional people making highly questionable decisions,” she says. “But that’s not the fault of the emotions.”

“Emotions are an integral part of our capacity to think and experience the world, and just like any other part of human nature, they can be used for good or ill.”

Author and doctor of traditional natural medicine, Michelle Schoffro Cook, reported on a study which finds that the higher emotion, gratitude, affects both the heart and our ‘genetic’ inventory.

Heart Rules

“Biologist Glen Rein at the popular Institute of HeartMath, in Boulder Creek, California,” Cook reports, “conducted a study of people who entered a state of heartfelt appreciation or unconditional love, what he referred to as ‘heart consciousness.’

“He found that these people could actually alter the winding and unwinding of DNA (genetic material) in solution.”

Ω

“It did not matter whether the participants were holding the DNA in a test tube or not,”  he reported. “By allowing their hearts to be full of positive and loving emotions,” “the participants in this study were able to affect DNA in a test tube!”

“That people’s thoughts and emotions can affect heart rhythms and genetic material may seem more like science fiction than reality to many people.”

“But more and more studies by leading scientists, quantum physicists, and world-renowned researchers are proving that our thoughts and feelings do have significant effects.”

“Thoughts are things — have tenacity, coherence, and life,” wrote a Theosophical Master: “They are real entities.”

Heart-Field

Love Rules

“What’s more,” Cook explains, “when the same people held loving feelings in their hearts, their heart rhythms became extremely coherent. Their electrocardiograms (ECGs) were analyzed by sophisticated frequency-analysis software.”

“Whenever they held the loving, appreciative thoughts, their heart rhythms followed a more coherent rhythmic pattern.”

“That people’s thoughts and emotions can affect heart rhythms and genetic material may seem more like science fiction than reality to many people. But more and more studies by leading scientists, quantum physicists, and world-renowned researchers

Λ

“What we think about matters. It can be difficult not to focus on our problems when we are faced with them, but taking some time out of each day to feel gratitude and appreciation for the positive people, influences, experiences, and things in our lives can go a long way toward healing our bodies.”

Future of Theosophy

by William Quan Judge
(Co-Founder of the Theosophical Society)

“If we had five hundred members in the Society loving one another with true hearts, not criticizing nor condemning, and all bent on one aim with one belief we could sweep the whole world with our thoughts. And this is our work in the future, the work traced out for us by those Masters in whom so many of us firmly believe.”

W. Q. Judge

Emotional Genius

“How would you feel if you had instant access to clear intuition, healthy boundaries, positive self-esteem,” writes Karla McLaren, “and the ability to focus, ground, and revitalize yourself effortlessly?

“And what would your relationships be like if you understood yourself and other people well enough to communicate even difficult messages with empathy and clarity?

“And what would you say if I told you that all of these skills and abilities come directly from your emotions?”

Ho’oponopono

We all would welcome some healing tools and strategies to help us overcome the destructive effects of repetitive negative behaviors and thoughts. Facilitator, Mabel Katz, helps us better understand the powerful, ancient Hawaiian healing mantra of Ho’oponopono below:

The Cleaning Tool

“Ho’oponopono teaches that we are created in the exact likeness of The Divine,” Mabel Says.

“…but the reason that we don’t experience this on a moment to moment basis is because we’ve got garbage (memories) replaying in our subconscious minds.”

Perfect Solution

“You don’t have to know what you are cleaning with,” Mabel believes, “because there is a part of you that knows everything. This part of you is only waiting for you to give it permission to help you with that problem.

“It has the perfect solution to the problem, and the perfect answer to all your questions.”

Science and Faith

“Thus faith and science are not enemies, but allies. They are two sides of the same coin. It had been true for hundreds of years, but in 1931 a skinny young Austrian mathematician named Kurt Gödel proved it.

“No time in the history of mankind has faith in God been more reasonable, more logical, or more thoroughly supported by rational thought, science and mathematics.

– Perry Marshall, “Gödel’s Incompleteness

Fire of Mind

The Mind in Theosophy is always symbolized by fire, which also represents the heart quality— manifesting as empathy and aspiration, and altruism.

Researchers have discovered that animals do not “tutor” each other the way humans do, which may be the tell-tale development distinguishing them.

δ

Without the unique stage of mind development which humans possess, our world could have easily evolved into a “planet of the apes.” Instead, evolution favored human beings, as the below video clip demonstrates.

The “triangle” spoken of in the video, the ability of “shared experience,” easily reminds the theosophical student of the “Atma-Buddhi-Manas” triad.

This triad, latent in the other kingdoms, is more coherent in the human being because the “manas” or mind point is more awake. And that’s the whole point of pointing — and why we have it, and ‘they’ don’t– yet.

Powers Awake

“To an Occultist there is nothing surprising in the idea that the physical world should be developing and acquiring new faculties — a simple modification of matter, new as it now seems to science, as incomprehensible as were at first the powers of steam, sound, electricity.

“But what does seem surprising is the spiritual stagnation in the world of intellect, and of the highest esoteric knowledge.”

-H. P. Blavatsky, Occult or Exact Science?

θ

“Theosophy: Its doctrines, if seriously studied, call forth, by stimulating one’s reasoning powers and awakening the inner in the animal man, every hitherto dormant power for good in us,” she wrote, “and also the perception of the true and the real, as opposed to the false and the unreal.”

“Tearing off with no uncertain hand the thick veil of dead-letter with which every old religious scriptures were cloaked,” Blavatsky writes, “scientific Theosophy, learned in the cunning symbolism of the ages, reveals to the scoffer at old wisdom the origin of the world’s faiths and sciences.

“It opens new vistas beyond the old horizons of crystallized, motionless and despotic faiths; and turning blind belief into a reasoned knowledge founded on mathematical laws — the only exact science.”

Charter for Compassion

The Charter brings together the voices of people from all religions. It seeks to remind the world that while all faiths are not the same, they all share the core principle of compassion and the Golden Rule.

“It will change the tenor of the conversation around religion, and will be a clarion call to the world.”

Universe Within

“It demonstrates to him under profounder and more philosophical aspects the existence,” Blavatsky continues, “of that which, repelled by the grossness of its dead-letter form, he had long since abandoned as a nursery tale.”

“It gives a clear and well-defined object, an ideal to live for, to every sincere man or woman belonging to whatever station in Society and of whatever culture and degree of intellect.”

“Practical Theosophy is not one Science, but embraces every science in life, moral and physical.”

Ψ

“It may, in short, be justly regarded as the universal ‘coach,’ a tutor of world-wide knowledge and experience. An erudition which not only assists and guides his pupils toward a successful examination for every scientific or moral service in earthly life, but fits them for the lives to come.

“If those pupils will only study the universe and its mysteries within themselves, instead of studying them through the spectacles of orthodox science and religions.”

Σ

Is Theosophy a Religion?

-H. P. Blavatsky

“Thus, unity of everything in the universe implies and justifies our belief in the existence of a knowledge at once scientific, philosophical and religious, showing the necessity and actuality of the connection of man and all things in the universe with each other…

“… which knowledge, therefore, becomes essentially religion, and must be called in its integrity and universality by the distinctive name of WISDOM-RELIGION.”

ða

Ebb and flow

The Secret Doctrine 1:17

“The second assertion of the Secret Doctrine is the absolute universality of that law of periodicity, of flux and reflux, ebb and flow, which physical science has observed and recorded in all departments of nature.

“An alternation such as that of Day and Night, Life and Death, Sleeping and Waking, is a fact so common, so perfectly universal and without exception, that it is easy to comprehend that in it we see one of the absolutely fundamental laws of the universe.

The True Sun

– William Quan Judge
“Our Sun and the True Sun”
(excerpt)

“…there is a true sun of which the visible one is a reflection, and that in this true one there is spiritual energy and help, just as our own beloved luminary contains the spring of our physical life and motion.

“Our own sun is, then, for us the symbol of the true one he reflects, and by meditating on “the most excellent light of the true sun” we can gain help in our struggle to assist humanity.

š

“Our physical sun is for physics, not metaphysics, while that true one shines down within us.

“The orb of day guards and sustains the animal economy; the true sun shines into us through its medium within our nature.”

Θ

“We should then direct our thought to that true sun and prepare the ground within for its influence, just as we do the ground without for the vivifying rays of the King of Day.”

  2. Where or where did you find that wonderful photo of the squirrel tending it’s little baby??!! Just amazing…this post is remarkable, thank you very much…I am forever Grateful for my Universal Coach, Theosophy…before Theosophy I walked around with a question mark in my head…now, with Theosophy, I may still walk around with a question mark in my head, but at least I know where to go to find answers! Gregg Braden’s explanation of the different modes of prayer and his story about the prayer for rain, clears up a whole lot of confusion, and I think it sheds light, if that’s possible, Mr. Judge’s statement and wish about the future of Theosophy and how practically attainable it really is. A question came into my head…the meditation/contemplation on the “Big Idea”, as to what is ours…could it be our own Big Idea is connected to our individual Star? Anyway, now that there are 8 billion people evolving on earth, all we need is 8 thousand of one mind/heart/centered in the Light, centered in Love, centered in Peace…I’m in! Namaste All, Monica loves you…

    • The ‘big idea’ is written in our stars, as HPB says in the below quote. A bit longish, but captures the essential idea of individual Destiny and Karma. Follow the links to the references for further info:

“The star under which a human Entity is born, says the Occult teaching, will remain for ever its star, throughout the whole cycle of its incarnations in one Manvantara. But this is not his astrological star. The latter is concerned and connected with the personality, the former with the individuality. The ‘Angel’ of that Star, or the Dhyani-Buddha will be either the guiding or simply the presiding ‘Angel,’ so to say, in every new rebirth of the monad, which is part of his own essence, though his vehicle, man, may remain for ever ignorant of this fact. The adepts have each their Dhyani-Buddha, their elder ‘twin Soul,’ and they know it, calling it ‘Father-Soul,’ and ‘Father-Fire.’ It is only at the last and supreme initiation, however, that they learn it when placed face to face with the bright ‘Image.’ How much has Bulwer Lytton known of this mystic fact when describing, in one of his highest inspirational moods, Zanoni face to face with his Augoeides?”

“The closer the approach to one’s Prototype, ‘in Heaven,’ the better for the mortal whose personality was chosen, by his own personal deity (the seventh principle), as its terrestrial abode. For, with every effort of will toward purification and unity…with that “Self-god,” one of the lower rays breaks and the spiritual entity of man is drawn higher and ever higher to the ray that supersedes the first, until, from ray to ray, the inner man is drawn into the one and highest beam of the Parent-Sun.

“Yes — ‘our destiny is written in the stars!’ Only, the closer the union between the mortal reflection man and his celestial prototype, the less dangerous the external conditions and subsequent reincarnations — which neither Buddhas nor Christs can escape. This is not superstition, least of all is it Fatalism. The latter implies a blind course of some still blinder power, and man is a free agent during his stay on earth. He cannot escape his ruling Destiny, but he has the choice of two paths that lead him in that direction, and he can reach the goal of misery — if such is decreed to him, either in the snowy white robes of the Martyr, or in the soiled garments of a volunteer in the iniquitous course; for, there are external and internal conditions which affect the determination of our will upon our actions, and it is in our power to follow either of the two. Those who believe in Karma have to believe in destiny, which, from birth to death, every man is weaving thread by thread around himself, as a spider does his cobweb; and this destiny is guided either by the heavenly voice of the invisible prototype outside of us, or by our more intimate astral, or inner man, who is but too often the evil genius of the embodied entity called man. Both these lead on the outward man, but one of them must prevail; and from the very beginning of the invisible affray the stern and implacable law of compensation steps in and takes its course, faithfully following the fluctuations. When the last strand is woven, and man is seemingly enwrapped in the net-work of his own doing, then he finds himself completely under the empire of this self-made destiny. It then either fixes him like the inert shell against the immovable rock, or carries him away like a feather in a whirlwind raised by his own actions, and this is — Karma.”
