God in a Box, a Hundred Versions of It

falling-lightCHRISTOS is the Greek word from which the term Christ is derived. It is an archaic term that was applied to every Initiate of a certain degree within the Mystery Temples of old.

St. Paul, echoing the Gnostic belief in the saving grace of the indwelling spiritual essence in man, refers to “the Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27).

The Christos principle is never some thing or person outside or separate from us. Isis-Osiris is the symbolic image of spirit guarding the good and holy mind of humankind.

Every human being is a potential Christ, the unfolding of the Christ-life a major feature of the Gospels, esoterically understood. Christos is called “the WAY,” the glorified Spirit of Truth, and the reunion which makes the soul (the Son) One with the (Father) Spirit. But in truth, gender as we understand it plays no part in this drama of spiritual awakening.

“There is only one religion, though
there are a hundred versions of it.”

 – George Bernard Shaw

The Ankh

Christ is confirmed, by H. P. Blavatsky, as “the divine principle in every human being.” She also wrote in her article The Esoteric Character of the Gospels: “He who strives to resurrect the Spirit crucified in him by his own terrestrial passions, and buried deep in the ‘sepulchre’ of his sinful flesh; he who has the strength to roll back the stone of matter from the door of his own inner sanctuary, he has the risen Christ in him.”

As with the Christos, the Father Spirit, God, is never a separate being, but exists everywhere. “Our DEITY is neither in a paradise, nor in a particular tree, building, or mountain,” Blavatsky wrote, “it is everywhere, in every atom of the visible as of the invisible Cosmos — in, over, and around every invisible atom, and divisible molecule:

“…for IT is the mysterious power of evolution and involution, the omnipresent, omnipotent, and even omniscient creative potentiality.”

“The worship of the dead-letter in the Bible,” Mme. Blavatsky wrote in the Key to Theosophy, “is but one more form of idolatry, nothing better. Hence, the Bible is not the ‘Word of God,’ but contains at best the words of fallible men, and imperfect teachers. Yet read esoterically, it does contain, if not the whole truth, still, ‘nothing but the truth,’ under whatever allegorical garb. Only: Quot homines tot sententiœ.”

God in the Box

If you’ve ever been curious about God, Jesus Christ, Adonai, Allah, Buddha, something spiritual you can’t describe, what agnostics question, or why atheists don’t believe, then see God In The Box. It’s is a documentary
film that follows filmmaker Nathan Lang and his crew, as they explore the diverse and curious ways we see God, in our mind’s eye — through the lens of their amazing Box.

God of Theosophy

Isis Unveiled was H. P. Blavatsky’s first work tasked to reintroduce occult ideas about science, religion and the cosmos to the world at large. “When, years ago, we first travelled over the East, exploring the penetralia of its deserted sanctuaries,” she wrote (Isis Unveiled Preface 1:vi), “two saddening and ever-recurring questions oppressed our thoughts:

“Where, Who, What is GOD? Who ever saw the IMMORTAL SPIRIT of man, so as to be able to assure himself of man’s immortality?”

“It was while most anxious to solve these perplexing problems that we came into contact with certain men, endowed with such mysterious powers and such profound knowledge that we may truly designate them as the sages of the Orient. To their instructions we lent a ready ear.

“They showed us that by combining science with religion, the existence of God and immortality of man’s spirit may be demonstrated like a problem of Euclid. For the first time we received the assurance that the Oriental philosophy has room for no other faith than an absolute and immovable faith in the omnipotence of man’s own immortal self.”

Initiation Required

“The evolution of the God-idea proceeds apace with man’s own intellectual evolution. So true it is that the noblest ideal to which the religious Spirit of one age can soar, will appear but a gross caricature to the philosophic mind in a succeeding epoch!,” wrote H. P. Blavatsky (Secret Doctrine 1:326):

“The philosophers themselves had to be initiated into perceptive mysteries, before they could grasp the correct idea of the ancients in relation to this most metaphysical subject.”

“Otherwise — outside such initiation — for every thinker there will be a ‘Thus far shalt thou go and no farther,’ mapped out by his intellectual capacity — as clearly and as unmistakably as there is for the progress of any nation or race in its cycle, by the law of Karma.

“Outside of initiation, the ideals of contemporary religious thought must always have their wings clipped, and remain unable to soar higher. Idealistic as well as realistic thinkers, and even free-thinkers, are but the outcome and the natural product of their respective environments and periods.”

One Drop

“We were taught that this omnipotence comes from the kinship of man’s spirit with the Universal Soul — God! The latter, they said, can never be demonstrated but by the former. Man-spirit proves God-spirit, as the one drop of water proves a source from which it must have come.

“Tell one who had never seen water, that there is an ocean of water, and he must accept it on faith or reject it altogether. But let one drop fall upon his hand, and he then has the fact from which all the rest may be inferred. After that he could by degrees understand that a boundless and fathomless ocean of water existed.

“Blind faith would no longer be necessary; he would have supplanted it with KNOWLEDGE.”

“When one sees mortal man displaying tremendous capabilities, controlling the forces of nature and opening up to view the world of spirit, the reflective mind is overwhelmed with the conviction that if one man’s spiritual Ego can do this much, the capabilities of the FATHER SPIRIT must be relatively as much vaster–as the whole ocean surpasses the single drop in volume and potency.

Ex nihilo nihil fit; prove the soul of man by its wondrous powers — you have proved God!”

“Hope you have a great New Year. I wanted to let you know about a fantastic documentary, ‘God in the Box,” in which I am prominently featured:

“Some of you may recall all the fun we had a couple of years ago when we voted for ‘God in the Box’ in the Activist Film Festival. Note that it’s appeared in more festivals since then.”

“I really love this film, because it provides the gamut of spiritual and philosophical concepts, revealing the depth of humanity’s thoughts on religion. It also ties these ideas together with much of my material about the history of religions. I hope you enjoy the film as much as I did.”
